Conde Nast ‘declare war’ on Carine Roitfeld’s new magazine

Publisher Condé Nast are allegedly preventing prominent photographers and editors from working with the former Vogue Paris editor on her new publication, ‘CR Fashion Book’.

Carine Roitfeld’s new magazine project, CR Fashion Book, seems to have got her ex-employer Condé Nast in a spin. According to the New York Post, the publishing behemoth’s international chairman Jonathan Newhouse has been making sure prominent photographers and editors who are contracted exclusively to Condé Nast do not contribute to Roitfeld’s new publication.

When Roitfeld announced her plans for the bi-annual publication in April, revealing it would be a “celebration of fashion and creativity”, she was quick to address the inevitable comparisons to Vogue Paris, for which she was the editor for 10 years.

Vogue is a very beautiful magazine, an institution, and I learned so much working there,” she told WWD . “You can’t put yourself into competition with a magazine like Vogue; you have to create something new, something different. The page has been turned.”

But it appears that Newhouse isn’t taking any risks and sent out reminders to the likes of photographers Mario Testino, Craig McDean, and Mert Alas and Marcus Piggot reaffirming their Condé Nast-exclusive contracts.

“A call did go out from Jonathan Newhouse’s office with the idea to reinforce the fact that people were under exclusive contracts,” a source said. Reportedly even those who contribute to Condé Nast’s numerous titles but aren’t contractually bound are being persuaded not to support Roitfeld, fearing the “Condé Nast machine” and its ‘if your not with us your against us’ mentality.

But despite these apparent roadblocks there is no doubt that the publication will be both painfully cool and exclusive. The first issue features a never-before-seen Bruce Weber portrait of Patti Smith, and Roitfeld’s trademark risqué touch clearly wasn’t left in the offices of Vogue Paris as the cover features a topless Kati Nescher.

The debut issue of CR Fashion Book will hit shelves in September, with its creation being covered in a feature-length documentary currently being produced by Fabien Constant, which is slated to hit screens in 2013.
